What to Do When You Hate Everything in Your Closet
Feel like nothing in your closet works anymore? Here’s how to let go of what no longer fits your life and build a wardrobe that works for who you are today.
Ever stood in front of your closet thinking, “I have nothing to wear,” while staring at hangers full of clothes?
Same.
And here’s the kicker: I’m a personal stylist.
Life Changes—And So Should Your Wardrobe
I recently moved and left my corporate job. Before the move, I did what most of us do—I cleaned out my closet, donated pieces that didn’t serve me, and promised myself a fresh start.
But once I unpacked, I had a moment where I just stood there thinking…
“Why do I still have all of this?”
There were clothes from my teaching days, outfits I wore to corporate meetings, and pieces I hadn’t touched in years—but kept “just in case.” That’s when I realized something important:
My closet didn’t match the life I was living now.

When Your Closet No Longer Fits Your Life
Whether you’re recently retired, navigating a big life change, managing menopause, or just feeling stuck in your style—your closet can turn from a place of confidence into one of frustration.
Your wardrobe worked once… until it didn’t. That doesn’t mean you’ve done anything wrong. It just means your life evolved, and your clothes haven’t caught up yet.
3 Things to Do When You Hate Everything in Your Closet
Here’s what I tell my clients—and what I’m doing for myself right now:
1. Let go of your “used-to” clothes
If it doesn’t fit your body, lifestyle, or energy anymore, it’s okay to let it go. I recently said goodbye to my favorite pair of Mother jeans. I’d been holding onto them even though they didn’t fit—because they used to.
But they were taking up more than just space. They were tied to a version of me I’ve outgrown.
My body is perfect the way it is now.
Letting go made room for pieces that support the woman I am today.
2. Dress for the woman you are now
Not the woman from five years ago. Not the future version of you that only exists after you’ve “fixed” something.
Start building a wardrobe that supports your current life, body, and energy. This is what I call Style with Intention™—a personal styling philosophy that honors who you are right now.
3. Start with three outfits you love
Don’t try to overhaul your whole wardrobe overnight. Start small.
Pick three outfits that feel good and wear them on repeat. Let them be your “reset point” and build from there.
One of mine right now?
A white wide-leg cropped jean, a soft tee, and a great pair of sneakers.
It’s simple, feels like me, and I can wear it almost anywhere.
